My Dearest Friend
Hello, Princess? It’s only me creeping out of the shadows looking for daylight. I’ve just been hit over the skull with a migraine; the medics say if I go and bash my head against the window it’ll take the pane away – I guess they think I’m shamming. How the hell does one sham a migraine. It’s killing me. I’ve heard you’re off to Paris again soon to launch a few French submarines for NATO; but I hope my letter gets to you before you go.
I’ve just got back from classes where I’m doing a Russian language course to brush-up on my grammar. It’s a bit heavy going because there are two Irish guys in the same classroom studying Gaelic – and we’re all using Linguaphones and getting on each other’s nerves. I do two nights a week on the class and the rest of the time in my cell. I want to learn French next. Oui.
Are you in a good mood today? Can you possibly send that radio in, sister? I am just surviving the quiet nights but getting extremely bored in the process – I can’t even sing because the walls echo sound and I’d wake everybody up. So I’m lying awake all night with nothing to do but think – and too much thinking leads to brooding and that ain’t good. I’m a terrible singer, too.
Last night was freezing. I managed to get two extra blankets this afternoon from the stores and tonight I’m really going to dig-in. If that doesn’t work I’ll have to opt for a blood transfusion and a drip. Please write when you can, my friend. I’m keeping out of trouble still. Please take good care of yourself, and stay happy. Best Regards to Simon, your mum and dad, and Sunday.
