In defining the minimum parameters for the control units, the following factors should be kept in mind:

•

uniformity in relation to the daylight factor

•

current and future use of the spaces

•

possible need to build-in local human adjustment to the parameters

•

different visual needs and consequent different lighting levels, uniformity and so on.

Once the minimum control levels have been defined on the basis of these parameters and needs, the sensors will be positioned in the light of these needs. Their precise location will be chosen so as to shield the sensors, as far as possible, from interference, which the software is unable to eliminate.

Additional information on layouts for this method of control can be found in Figure 4 and also in Appendix E, where a number of Fact Sheets, summarising the specifications of actual systems with the main management strategies employed, can be found.

The second approach, which integrates lighting control with room comfort control, marks an important step forward towards energy use optimisation in a building. Such systems use a single centralised control unit to automate all the building’s safety and service equipment subsystems. These systems use both control systems and software modules for all the temperature and humidity control systems, plus the electric systems, by means of actuators on the various systems. Figure 5 illustrates the layout for this kind of system manufactured by an Italian firm, Italtel - Telesis.
