Chapter Seven

I woke up alone in the gigantic bed.

Once I remembered where I was, thanks to the soreness between my legs, I struggled up to a sitting position. “Ranger?” My voice was hoarse from all the screaming I’d done the night before.

There was no sound in answer but I saw the briefcase, my briefcase, with a note on top sitting on the table.

“Some hooker I turned out to be. Fell asleep on the job and everything.” Walking gingerly to the table I opened the note.

Raven,

You have saved more than my marriage. I am nothing without my true Raven, and thanks to you I will be able to win her back. Thank you for being the woman to give back my life to me.

I’ll never forget you, or last night.

Ranger

I bit my lower lip and blinked back the moisture from my eyes. Then laughed at myself for being emotional. Swallowing back that ache in my throat which made no sense, I opened the briefcase. There was eight grand inside, along with my jewelry.

“Holy motherlode. I must be one hell of a hooker.”

With a laugh that was a little hysterical, I closed up the briefcase and took it with me to the bathroom. I showered using steaming hot water to wash away the soreness.

After my scavenger hunt through the suite to find my clothes, I got dressed, put on all my jewelry since I was sure Crawford and Danny would be waiting for me when I returned to my apartment. I could give them the briefcase and still go and see what I could get for my jewelry.

I took the elevator down to the lobby. It was still early but I had to give the loan sharks credit, they were ready and waiting for me the moment I exited the elevator.

“Where the fuck have you been?” Crawford snarled into my ear as his hand gripped my upper arm.

“Take it easy, guys. I was raising money for you.” I tried to free my arm from Crawford’s grasp, but he didn’t let me go until he’d taken the briefcase from me.

Danny laughed, ignoring the looks they were getting from the staff at the hotel as we exited the lobby and stepped out into the courtyard. “You think a couple hundred dollars is gonna cut it after the night we had looking for your skinny ass?”

“Well now,” Crawford said with a jubilant if not gleeful laugh. “Lookie what a huge head of lettuce you plucked for us last night. Turns out you’re a caring wifey after all aren’t you, sweet peach?”

“How much?” Danny asked releasing my arm to try to peek inside the briefcase.

I put some distance between myself, Crawford and Danny but they were still close enough to catch me if I ran. “So now you have more than ten percent that’s more than––”

“It’s a great start. You keep putting that sweet ass to work for us, cupcake, and we’ll be able to meet under the kind of circumstances that will keep this pretty smile on my face.
