Chapter Thirteen
When Phillip poked the window shade aside in his study, the blue Explorer the detectives had arrived in was still parked in front of the house. His scalp went cold and tingly. He froze, watching them, as a slushy hole opened in his gut.
Why were they still here?
Letting the blinds fall back into place, he stepped away from the window. He should keep out of sight. Avoid projecting worry. If they saw him watching, they’d know he was stressed. After counting to sixty, he poked the blind aside again and sidled closer to the glass, peering out. The cold seeping in from the outside chilled his hot face.
The Explorer was still there.
His heart skipped a beat, then exploded into urgent, chaotic pounding.
The interior of the SUV was dark, so he couldn’t see what they were doing. Were they on the phone to their captain? Were they getting the okay to arrest him? He doubted they had enough for that step, not yet anyway. Everything they’d thrown at him during their interrogation—and that’s exactly what it had been, an interrogation—was circumstantial.
But that was about to change. He was certain of it.
Zaragoza’s eyewitness account of him in La Grande Maison’s parking lot at midnight changed everything. As did her statement that she’d seen his license plates. How ironic. He’d paid a fortune to have those plates transferred over to the new car…a goddamn fortune and all for nothing.
Because he was fucked. Completely fucked.
If the eyewitness had been anyone but a cop, he could have managed the fallout. He could have challenged the identification. As a judge with a history of handing down stern sentences, he could have cited someone out for revenge—someone with an ax to grind. He could have cast doubt on whoever had fingered him.
Not so when it came to Zaragoza.
As a respected detective of the Dark Falls Police Department, her identification would be accepted. It didn’t help that he’d had no altercation with her. No history. If the witness had been a different detective, say Detective Ryder, who he’d had to dress down a time or two in his courtroom, he could have used their resentment against him to cast doubt on their statement. But Zaragoza carried no grudge against him. She had no reason to lie.
Her identification of him in that parking lot would be believed. Had likely already been believed. Her captain would try to substantiate Zaragoza’s claim. Since he’d been spotted getting out of a cab, they’d go after the cab company. The timeframe of the hit and run and the proximity of Gingrich’s death to Phillip’s house was enough for a subpoena, which would force the cab company to hand their call logs over.
And once those records hit Major Crimes, Phillip’s life would be over.
Those call logs would set off a chain reaction and his carefully constructed storyline would implode. Not only would the cab records put him in the Maison’s parking lot at the exact time Zaragoza claimed, they would show he’d been picked up at the Weaverton.
