Electra and Elektra: A Complex Killer Either Way
Travis Langley
The Electra of Greek mythology is a lethal lady. To avenge her father, King Agamemnon, she plots her mother Clytemnestra’s death and persuades her brother Orestes to act as the assassin.34 Unlike other murderous figures in Greek tragedies, Electra goes unpunished. Psychiatrist Carl Jung named the Electra complex after her when he proposed a female counterpart to Sigmund Freud’s famous Oedipus complex.35 Freud thought that, at least unconsciously, boys aged three to six grow attracted to their mothers and therefore fear their fathers as rivals. Jung suggested that girls that age might experience a similar attraction to their fathers and animosity toward their mothers, though Freud disagreed.36
When writer/artist Frank Miller created Elektra Natchios,37 did he name this Greek assassin for the mythological figure or for the psychological complex? Although she does not plot to kill her mother, Elektra is born out of her mother’s death, saved from the womb as her mom dies in a terrorist attack (which Elektra’s older brother, Orestez, orchestrates).38 Some 20 years later, the death of her doting father drives Elektra into a life of murder.39 Elektra goes from training to fight evil to committing assassination for hire to admitting that she’s addicted to violence.40
“This particular character was designed around her name,” Miller has said. “The name Elektra has come to represent an entire psychological phenomenon. She was a young woman who had her sexual interest centered on her father, and just as she was transferring this to another man, her father is killed.”41 In a dreamlike, noncanonical tale authored by Miller, Elektra renames her parents in her head after the mythical Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. In this account, the grown Elektra vaguely recalls her father sexually abusing her when she was five, something she has learned is a false memory (pseudomemory) that is based on her own desire for intimacy, although she still wonders about that.42
