Chapter Fourteen

Mr. Graham jumped to his feet and broke their trance, leading the others into applause. “Well done, Miss Riverton. Not the choice I would’ve made, but well done.”

Miss Archibald smirked and folded her arms over her chest. “I thought it was a fitting choice for her.”

Greymore grinned down at Abigail’s confused frown. “Pay no attention to her. You played beautifully.”

They rejoined Mrs. Eddings. The older woman met her eyes with a grave face, and she squeezed Abigail’s shoulder as though to comfort her.

“I’ve always loved that piece. It almost moved me to tears this time.” Mrs. Eddings’s gaze was fixed forward as though she was lost to another time.

“Goodness, whatever was it about?”

Mrs. Eddings appeared not to hear Abigail’s question. When Abigail asked Greymore instead, he shushed her and directed her attention to Mr. Travers, who had taken up the harpsichord. She’d had no idea he played, but then again, she’d had no opportunity to find out. Her heart skipped when she recognized the song, the sounds of his baritone voice stealing her senses.

I’ve been lost to the world since I met you,

And I’d give my soul just for your gaze,

You’re the pulse of my blood to my heart,

I want you for the rest of my days.

I know that I’ve lost my moment,

And I don’t think I’ll come out right,

Now I’m consumed with such darkness,

I ache for the warmth of your light.

My heart weeps that you can’t see me,

And tears burn my eyes with my want,

Your voice echoes my every moment,

I live with the sound of your haunt.

I die that I can’t embrace you,

And our bodies, lips lie apart,

I die it can’t ever be me,

You’re the pulse of my blood to my heart.

When the song’s last chords faded, Mr. Travers grew still and fixed his attention above the harpsichord. His shoulders rose and fell as he breathed, like the song weighed across his back. He ignored the applause as he returned to his seat. All eyes focused on Miss Archibald and Mr. Travers. The hateful woman seemed to glow at the attention.

An expectant air filled the room.

Abigail slumped in on herself. The song had awoken unshed tears to her eyes. The lyrics were too close, too soon. After Nigel, she would never have love in return. It had been months, and she had come to terms with her spinsterhood. Yet the reality crashed down on her in the form of a soft, heart-aching melody from Mr. Travers’s lips. His perfect, kissable, and unobtainable lips.

She had experienced the words of the song as they’d crept through her bones to the root of her pain. Her breathing came fast as she tried to control the overwhelming sensations pulsing beneath her skin. Her stays tightened, and her chest strained against the fabric. She needed to get out. Now. Before she passed out, or worse, lost control of her tears.

She pushed to her feet and stumbled to the doors of the drawing room. Delia murmured her intentions to follow, but Mrs. Eddings stopped her.
