I DON’T KNOW WHAT WAKES me up. The familiar bed or the man behind me breathing into my ears. All I can remember is us together in that room, Ace tugging me from that party to his room in Xeon and then taking me against his desk again until we fell asleep.

Stirring away from him, I have every means to just go hunt for something to drink. My throat feels too tender and in a hurry, I trip over, busting my knees in the process.

A whimper leaves from my lips but thankfully Ace is still sleeping. Cradling my knees on the floor, I’m surprised to find the source of my pain under the bed. It’s the corner of a briefcase peeking through.

I stare it for so long before I can’t stop my curiosity from winning. In retrospect, the thing is heavy but when I open it, I’m left numb. Even in a nightmare, I can remember this hoodie, only now it has a hole in it. Removing the article, I find a watch, Ace’s favorite, and to my shock, letters upon letters.

Did he steal Penelope’s letters from that manor?

But the color is all wrong, the handwriting is too harsh and when I read them I can no longer just stay in one place. Limping, I pace around, every word haunting me to the point of leaving.

At fifteen, I admired Raine.

At twenty-eight, I destroyed her.

I don’t know how I manage to call Carter to pick me up from one block away from Xeon. Carter, my saving grace, comes exactly on time to hear my phone ringing, the familiar name flashing on the screen. Maybe that’s why he gives me space, letting me sit on the back.

But I can’t just answer yet. Not when his words are still so fresh in my mind. Ace, my monster, has spent five years in prison writing to me.

Praising me.

Admitting to killing my memories when it got worse.

When the phone rings for the tenth times, I shouldn’t have reached for it with trembling fingers but it’s not until I hear his voice that I react. It’s like my body is alive again. Like it’s living for the chase, for the danger.

“Where the fuck are you!”

“I-I am going home.” I croak out.

I hear a tired sigh from the other side. “Alone?”

Gripping the phone, I shake my head even if he can't see me. “No, I called someone."

“Called someone-” He pauses, then I hear a chuckle. “Some days you fly too high for me to catch. What was so important that you can't wake me up?"

His confessions.

Darkest secrets. Where do I start?

In the end, I settle with. "You needed the sleep. Besides, I can't keep lying that I'm with Carolina. She was supposed to leave for England yesterday."

I hear his footsteps and then some shuffle. Did he settle down to hear me? I get my answer after a few more minutes of scooting around. “About that...I didn't put Carolina up to follow you, it's just her mother I made a deal with.
