NINETEEN

Owen stared at his screen. Reid would justly chew him up and spit him out for doing this. He fingered the keyboard without pressing any letters. Sarina would pile some other project on him because she’d assume he wasn’t busy enough. He was back full-time as CEO, and he had an inbox stacked with unanswered missives and unsolved mysteries. The only thing he wanted was lights, camera, action.

He clicked his curser in the box and his user name appeared. OWL. He typed a query number that he’d rigged and waited for her. Two minutes and her ID popped up.

Did you just break into my query backlog?

Of course not. I wouldn’t sanction the misuse of company assets. I would however like to misuse your considerable assets as soon as that can be arranged.

There was a pause then: You made me spit coffee on my screen.

He grinned and typed: The things you make me want to do to you. There’d be a good bit of spit involved.

You know these chat sessions are recorded and stored.

He grimaced. He hadn’t worked out how to erase a recorded chat conversation yet. He’d need Reid or Dev for that, which means he’d have to explain him and Cara and he didn’t quite have that straight. They’d spent a couple of weekends together full of movies, meals and the kind of intense making out that left them both anxious for more.

I’ll deny everything. He wanted to take that back as soon as he’d hit send. It’ll be deleted, don’t worry.

Right, because you only want to be my rumored boyfriend.

That made him pause. He was having sex that wasn’t sex with her and it was better than he expected it could be. He felt more for her than any woman he’d had in his life since Lacey. He’d freaked out when Cara drove the Rover. Yippee-ki-yay. He was more than a little in love with her.

Her typing appeared on his screen. We’re so fresh and shiny, and who you are and who I am, might be best to keep it that way for now. I’ve not told anyone about us. There will be enough attention on you.

That was good sense. He’d decided he’d talk about his addiction issue with staff and PR had lined up interviews, and he had to break it to his family before it all went live. He’d be under the spotlight and that didn’t need to be any more complicated.

Your rumored boyfriend thinks you’re awesome and he wants to make you squeal again as soon as possible.

I do not squeal.

And you don’t blush or writhe beautifully either.

Is there anything else I can help you with, sir? *Not as special as you think you are.*

Yeah, he had a future he’d started to look forward to again, it was looking shinier: she could help with that.

There’s a stationery cupboard that needs cleaning.

Are you suggesting . . . wait. Heist. We’re a paperless office, we don’t have a stationery cupboard.

Donut, she’s on to me.

You know some of us who don’t freaking run the company have work to do.
