Chapter Six

As soon as Mitchell and Daniel gave their blessings that the new group of Ravens could stay, on a trial basis, the leaders of different divisions swooped down on the poor newbies like a group of locusts. Clarkston drew Kidd close to his chest and sent a silent prayer that somebody like Shane or one the Raccoons didn’t lay claim on his Raven. Not that Clarkston actually thought that the Raccoons would actually want a Raven, but Clarkston wasn’t taking any chances.

Shane grabbed Slick. “I want this one.”

Clarkston tilted his head to the side. “Are you sure? He’s mouthy and doesn’t take to authority very well.”

Shane gave an evil smile. “Don’t worry. I’ll break him, and when I do, he’ll make for a great assassin.”

He then reached out and grabbed the smallest of all the Ravens, Ran. “I want this one, too.”

Clarkston didn’t know who was more dumbstruck, the room or the tiny Raven who was now in Shane’s grasp. The poor guy looked like he was about to pee, pass-out, or do both, his gaze skidded the room as he seemed to be looking for help.

Kidd took one step forever. “Are you sure? Ran is small, and he’s the youngest in our group. He’s never shown any gifts in battle skill that would be on the intense caliber that an assassin would require.”

Shane shot off a hard glare. The one that screamed don’t fuck with me. “I know what I’m doing, and I want him. You would be how surprised at how dangerous small assassins could be. They can be in and out before their target even realizes that they’re dead.”

Okay, that seemed pretty intense. Then again, one of the first things that Clarkston had learned was that assassins were a necessary evil. He also knew that Shane was the best around. So, if he said that Slick and Ran showed great potential, then they did.

He gave Kidd’s hand a tight squeeze. “Listen to him. I’ve never seen him to be wrong. He will be hard in his training, but he will be fair. Slick and Ran will become amazing assassins, and nothing will be ever be able to touch them.”

Kidd seemed to be having some inner battle within himself, but he finally gave a slight nod of his head. “Okay, but only because I trust you, Clarkston.”

Shane gave a frown. “Wow, most people here still don’t trust him, and they’ve known him for three months. You’ve known this goof for what—three days? You are one crazy bird. I like that in you.”

“I aim to please,” Kidd drawled.

Clarkston held his breath. Kidd was playing with some pretty dangerous fire, and he didn’t realize it. Clarkston had seen Shane punch out other shifters for being less mouthy.

Instead, much to Clarkston’s great relief, Shane burst into laughing. “You’re going to fit right in here, Raven or not. Oh, I will give you one warning, if you do kill something, whatever you do, don’t bring the head back. Even more, don’t put the head in the middle of the dining room table.
