The implicit logic of the ‘constrained choice’ thesis is therefore as follows: Since a ‘constrained choice’ still constitutes a ‘choice’, it follows that there are other options and that, therefore, the objectification of the social and economic landscape by the body-subject that has become involved in crime and drugs (in this case Bob) has clearly resulted in the wrong option being chosen. Put another way, since normative standards of conduct provide an implicit benchmark for what constitutes a responsible choice (or act of human agency), and is the measure against which action can be judged, then a conscious rejection of those norms in favour of ‘others’ constitutes a deficient act of reasoning – even if that choice is deemed ‘understandable’ given the body-subject’s occupation of a marginal social and economic position. The implication, then, is that the social scientific point of view constructs conforming and deficient acts of agency as differentially constituted (the latter is the product of a ‘wrong’ choice) and therefore crime and drug use as deficient acts of agency – even if protagonists of the range of theoretical perspectives discussed in Chapter 2 do not explicitly present it as such.
