Tips for Better Photos

• Read your camera manual. Really. It is full of useful information, such as how to adjust your settings, what to do with a backlit subject, and how to delete images.

• Keep the camera set at the highest level of quality/resolution and obtain a larger memory card.

• Don’t use your flash. Buy a tripod and use it when the light is low. You can photograph the moon, you know.

• Fill your frame with your subject. Photographing your friend as she sits in your living room? Step forward until your friend fills the frame. Step back a couple of steps, look again. Do you want a head shot? A full-size shot of her seated? A photo of her hands folded on her lap? Do you really need to include the background chair, the floor, the wall, the lamp, the window? Probably not.

• Take many photographs—twenty of one subject is not too many. Vary your approaches, such as the angle or your distance from the subject.

• Use the “delete” function on your camera and the delete key on your computer.
