2.9. Yasmine ElMeleegy, The Fever, 2014

El Meleegy’s statement on the installation reads “The Fever Hospital . . . resembles a nightmare, with the sounds of its leaking, worn-out water taps. Being admitted into it after being infected with malaria was a horrifying experience. One could smell silence, fear and death in the old, decayed building and its dormitories” (yasmineelmeleegy.com). Most of the sculptures that sit on the shelf are clear glass and resemble deformed syringes or vials. Amber glass pieces resemble spores or viruses, or possibly red blood cells infected with the malaria parasite. A few strangely shaped vials seem to contain the disease elements, while some of the syringes appear to be “contaminated” with them. These glass sculptures powerfully symbolize the broken health care system in Egypt, particularly the inadequate physical infrastructure that lacks sterile conditions and inhibits healing.

In her first solo exhibition, Rites of Passage at the Townhouse gallery, ElMeleegy combines concern about public processes with personal issues having to do with her own natal family, which was disrupted by the early loss of her mother to cancer. The exhibit ran from February to April 2018. It consisted of a set of sculptures that explore memories and emotional wounds within a personal family context and pose questions about repair of the relics of both personal and public histories. My discussion here focuses on several sculptures within the Rites of Passage exhibit: Emergency Room, Fountain, Video—Vase and Miniature Sculpture.
