Chapter 12 – Becca

Sunshine streamed through the window, waking Becca. She froze a moment, confused, still half asleep. It felt like Sam was next to her, his arm wrapped around her waist. Reality set in a second later and she shivered with revulsion. She groaned and rolled over just enough to see Luke asleep next to her, his chest slowly rising and falling. She stared at him a moment, and then quickly up at the door. How fast could she find the keys and unlock the door before he woke up?

Luke mumbled in his sleep and rolled onto his back, sliding his arm away from Becca and up to cover his eyes. Behind him, the drawers to the coffee table were closed and locked, confirming she wouldn’t be able to get to any means of helping her escape without a lot of force.

Now wasn’t the time. It would be coming soon, but she doubted herself being able to make a clean getaway now. Hadn’t Luke said he had friends keeping watching on the place?

She chose to play it safe and got up to go to the bathroom instead. She climbed up onto her feet and stumbled toward it as quietly as she could. She closed the door and let out a long sigh. Figuring a way out was crucial. She needed the keys to the place. Or if she knocked Luke out, what were the chances she could run out of the place screaming for help?

A loud curse followed by a slam of a fist made her jump. A crash of something followed from the living room. What if he set the place on fire with her locked in the bathroom? Terror and distrust, two common emotions now running daily inside of her, erupted. She swung open the bathroom door and rushed out.

Luke pulled his fist from the wall and turned to stare at her. Before she could move, he rushed toward her and wrapped his arms tightly around her. He squeezed her to his chest and spun her around the hallway. “You didn’t leave.”

She’d tried to duck as he’d come rushing, thinking he was going to hit her. It took a moment for the shock to wear off. “I... I just needed to use the bathroom.” She tried to pull away but he held onto her tightly.

“I was so worried when I woke. You... you weren’t there.” Luke sounded completely broken. His grip on her tightened, forcing the breath from her lungs.

“I’m right here. Please don’t be mad.”

“I’m not mad, I’m grateful. You stayed, you weren’t tied up, and you stayed.”

“Luke, I can’t breathe.” When he instantly released her, she tried to play the Stockholm syndrome part. “Of course I stayed.” She forced a smile. “I’m not going anywhere.” Yet.

“I’m going to make you the most amazing breakfast.” He grinned and kissed the top of her head before heading toward the kitchen. “Anything special you want?”

She glanced at the door and his gaze followed hers and narrowed. “Um... Waffles?”

“Again?”

“They’re really good.
