Chapter Six

Robby started dozing on his way back to the ranch. He curled up on the seat and closed his eyes, smiling about the day he’d spent with Shott’s grandfather. He liked the guy. Maybe not at first. Zach had been a bit intimidating. But all was good.

He didn’t even pull away when Shott rested his warm hand on Robby’s calf. It was almost as if the man needed the contact. And in way, Robby did as well. Things were not turning out the way he’d planned. Maybe that wasn’t such a bad thing after all. Shott’s home was warm and welcoming and so was the man’s family.

But it was Shott’s easiness that was getting to Robby. The man didn’t push. He just let Robby know he was there in subtle ways. Robby liked that.

When Shott began to slowly rub Robby’s calf, Robby’s eyes grew heavy. He was nearly asleep when the truck lurched violently forward.

“What the hell,” Shott said gruffly as Robby sat up.

“What’s going on?” Robby asked. He glanced out of the back window to see bright lights behind them, and they were too damn close for comfort.

“Put your seat belt on,” Shott said. “And hang on tight.”

With his heart beating wildly in his chest, Robby did as Shott instructed. The roads were slippery. It could have been an accident. Maybe the person behind them hit his brakes and lost control.

Robby screamed when they were rear-ended again. This was no accident. The person behind them was intentionally trying to run Shott off the road. Robby’s stomach was twisted into knots as he braced his hands on the dashboard.

The truck hit them again, and this time Shott lost control. The truck spun in a circle, and Robby swore his life flashed before his eyes. He slammed them closed as the truck continued to spin before it jostled them around and slammed into something.

“Are you hurt?” Shott asked as unbuckled his seat belt and slid to Robby’s side. “Talk to me, Robby. Does anything hurt on you?”

“M-my chest.” It felt as though someone was slamming a concrete fist into his damn chest. Shott raised Robby’s shirt and then cursed.

“You got some bruising.” Shott released Robby from his seat belt and turned him around before examining his chest once more. “Does it hurt to breathe?”

“No.” Robby glanced out the side window. “Who did that? Do you think they’ll be coming back? Why would someone try to run us off the road?”

Shott’s light grey eyes darkened as he reached under his seat and pulled out a handgun. He set the shiny chrome weapon in his lap before he grabbed his cell phone from his pocket. Robby sat there staring at the gun. He’d never seen one in real life before. Just the thought of what Shott might do with the thing made chills run down Robby’s spine.

“Hey, it’s Shott. Someone just ran me and Robby off the road,” Shott said into the phone and then gave whomever he was talking to directions to where they were.
