Chapter 12

Five thousand words and counting. Nero couldn’t help but grin at the fruit of today’s work as he gazed at the laptop’s screen. Not only was the story progressing nicely, but if the muse kept him this occupied, he’d finish it days before anticipated. Norman would be thrilled to hear this.

Checking the clock, he realized it was almost one and he hadn’t eaten anything all day, caffeine his only fuel. He got up to heat himself the leftover lasagna Nick gave him last night. He stared out his kitchen window wondering about Nick and where things between them were leading. Something about Nick Colt made Nero feel emotions he hadn’t felt in decades. Was it hope? Redemption? Or something far more complicated and revolutionary? Could Nick be the one to change everything?

What Nero knew for sure was that he’d never experienced such physical and emotional attractions. Not even with Elenora, his wife. And she was the only person he ever loved. She had been dead for years, and yet not a day passed by that he didn’t miss her. Whenever the hurt and longing for her surfaced, he’d dive into his writing. It helped him cope with the loss, the void that encompassed his heart and soul. A soulless man walking, he was.

But not anymore. Ever since he met Nick, and saw in him something no one else possessed, his voided heart began to change. Just like the Grinch whose heart was two sizes too small, so was his before Nick fell into his life. When someone had been through what Nero had and seen all he did, one tended to close in on oneself, which was what Nero did. He closed himself off from the world that disappointed and hurt him time and again. And he delved into fantasy worlds where the good guys finished first, where love did conquer all and evil squashed like the ugly bug that it was.

Now that Nick came into his life and opened his eyes, his Grinchy heart not only grew but warmed with passion and maybe love. It was far too early for love, no doubt. But if all continued to progress as he planned and Nick was truly what Nero hoped he was, his savior, then yes, love would blossom. And Nero could finally escape purgatory and live in the Garden of Eden.

A shudder of excitement and fear washed over his mind and body. He was letting himself go and expecting Nick to catch him. Would his handsome savior actually save him or let him fall to his doom? Only time and further tests would tell.

As he took a third mouthful of the delicious lasagna that tasted as good, maybe even better, than the night before, he heard a knock. While he headed for the door, he glanced again at his clock in the living room. One thirty sharp. Just on time, as usual. Opening the door, tall, muscular, raven-haired Maurice leaned on the wall outside his door. When he smiled, his bright white teeth sparkled, making him even better looking.
