Chapter 15
“I don’t think the Lord could have given us a prettier day,” said Ethel as she focused on the road ahead. “We should be doing something fun, something that doesn’t involve crime solving.” She had tried her best to suggest anything but where they were headed, but Velma ignored her, keeping her attention on the phone.
Ethel sighed. “Did you hear me?”
“I hear you, but I’m ignoring the fact that you’re being Debbie Downer.”
“I’m not sure we should be doing this, Velma. Braxton had a point: whoever killed Randy sent a message. I don’t want us to end up the next old, dead crows.”
Velma turned the phone off and stuffed it in her purse. “I think I know how the killer did it. Randy was in his office minding his own business when someone killed him and stuffed him out the window. That’s why the window was wiped clean like the dumpster.”
“Well, like I meant earlier, the cops aren’t going to leave blood,” said Ethel, making a sour face.
“Of course not, Ethel. And that’s my point. You heard Riley. He said there was blood evidence at the scene. Now, it’s common knowledge that there would have been blood where Randy fell. It doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to know that, so that’s already implied, but I don’t think that’s the scene they were talking about. I think they meant the office, where blood wasn’t expected. They cleaned up the blood evidence, and left the bird shit? I don’t think so. I think the killer cleaned it up before the bird flew in, which happened after the blood was cleaned up and the window was left open to make it look like Randy jumped.”
“Then how did the cops find it?”
“Luminol. It will show them where the blood was. The must have found trace blood evidence inside the office.”
“So what’s that got to do with Mayor Sheffield?”
Velma sighed, wondering if Ethel had even been paying attention. “He was the last person who met with Randy! Which means he’s most likely the one who pushed him out the window. But not only that, Ethel. The day we were in his office, he had one of those pens. Maybe he used it to write the ransom note and then put it in his pocket. People steal pens all the time.”
“Wow. I can’t believe you got all that just from one visit,” said Ethel.
“Just like Sherlock Holmes, Ethel, all it takes is a little bit of observation and deduction.”
When they arrived in the new part of Bliss, where the streets were much nicer, and the flowers were so plenty they almost masked the rotten egg smell from the nearby paper mill, Ethel tried one more time. “Can’t we just go home, Velma? I need to take Miss Vicky for a walk.”
“Miss Vicky isn’t a damn dog, Ethel, and we’re already here.” She pointed to the building as Ethel turned in to the lot out front.
“It’s not too late to turn back and go home and let the good officers of Bliss do their job.
