Chapter Nine

Cooper moved swiftly and silently along the side of the building, keeping Mia tucked behind him. His choices were limited, so he could only hope he’d picked the right direction, far away from where Junior’s men might be waiting and watching. He inwardly railed at himself for not finding a different place for them to stay. Logically, it made sense that Junior’s goons would eventually find out where he lived.

A dark shadow moved up ahead. He froze, feeling the slight pressure as Mia bumped into him from behind.

The shadow shifted again, revealing the barest hint of a dark shape similar to that of a tall man. A guy he felt certain was one of Junior’s thugs.

What were the odds they’d stumble across another bad guy looking to rob people?

Cooper shifted slightly, easing the pack from his shoulders. As if reading his mind, Mia took the weight of the knapsack, silently lowering it to the ground. He didn’t have much in the way of a weapon, but he managed to slide one of his slender colored pencils from his pack.

It wasn’t much, but it was better than nothing.

The shadow moved again; he was standing at the corner of the building now. It seemed as if the guy was growing impatient with the delay. Cooper could relate, he knew the guy in the hallway would be inside his apartment any minute. There wasn’t a moment to waste, yet he also needed to get close enough to strike.

When the guy turned toward him, Cooper knew the gig was up. He lunged forward, stabbing at the man’s face with the pencil even as he braced for the impact of a bullet or a knife.

By some miracle he managed to catch the guy off guard. The man stumbled backward, yelling out in pain as the sharpened end of the pencil struck its mark near his eye. Cooper didn’t let up, kicking and punching the guy until he was on the ground.

Cooper was about to head back toward Mia when she appeared at his side, swinging the knapsack to hit the man on the head. He was shocked she’d done that, but there wasn’t a second to waste. He grabbed her hand and began to run. This time, silence wasn’t critical. They desperately needed to get far away from the scene of the crime.

He took her through one parking lot, then another. The trolley
