Alcoholism and Suicide

The problem of alcoholism and drug abuse among many people of the working age is often produced by the inability to achieve personal and professional realization as a result of being “unfit” in a community. For instance, unemployment is cited as one of the major causes of alcoholism[14], among other factors, leading to depression and, sometimes, to suicide. In most cases, however, those unable to find employment in their indigenous locales are compelled to seek a job in different places, which serves as a basis for regionalism. A study by Miller and Millman consider the so called “innocent bystanders” who are not consciously intending to harm the alcoholic.

Most of the time, there is not conscious intent to help the alcoholic continue the drinking and the suicide. However, there are motives that are not always noble that lurk unconsciously. These frequently arise out of self-defense in the face of alcoholism. The alcoholic is an intimidating beast who can provoke and foster resentments that paralyze those affected by the alcoholic and render them incapable of making rational decisions regarding the welfare of the alcoholic. The resentment is more likely to drive the enabler to drive the enabler to undermine the attempts by the alcoholic to achieve sobriety.[15]
