The Next Day
I looked at the stacks of magazines on the coffee table and dozens of open tabs on Marina’s computer and winced.
I placed my hand on her shoulder with an uneasy smile.
“Babe, we don’t need to start planning for the wedding for at least a year or so,” I said as I took in the plethora of wedding paraphernalia in front of me.
Being engaged for six months was one thing, but staring wedding planning in the face was another thing. There were too many things to look at, seizing my heart in a panic.
Marina shrugged as she bounced from webpage to webpage. “We need a rough idea of the horror awaiting us.”
I plopped down on the couch next to her and snatched up a magazine. “I wouldn’t refer to our future wedding as a horror if I were you.”
“I was referring to the planning process. I suck at organizing events, and so do you,” she said. One website grabbed her attention, and she jotted some ideas down on her notebook.
“Then let’s hire a wedding planner,” I suggested. The less work I would have to put in for this, the better. It didn’t mean I wasn’t excited about marrying me best friend; I just didn’t want to do all the legwork and phone calls. If I could I hire someone to show me my options, have me choose, sign a contract, and write a check, then I would be the happiest person alive.
Marina researched some wedding planners.
We blanched when we saw how much they cost.
“What’s our budget for the wedding again?” I asked while I tried to sneak a peek at her notebook.
Marina grimaced, making my stomach roll.
“It can’t be that bad, can it?” I asked, trying to lighten the mood.
“Honey, we’re still paying off our student loans. Granted, we’ll have them paid off faster now that we’re living together and saving money, but I think we’ll have to choose,” she said.
A groan escaped my lips, and I reached for my phone. I pulled up a search engine and typed a few keywords. Marina leaned over to glance at my screen, and she narrowed her eyes.
“Jasmine, you can’t be serious,” she deadpanned.
I gave her my best and fakest smile. “It’s an option.”
“We are not taking out a loan to pay for our wedding!” she yelled, making me gigle. It was a stupid idea, sure, but I wanted to know all of our options.
I reached over and played with her ponytail. “What do you have in mind then?”
She shrugged and set her notebook on her laptop. After wrapping an arm around my waist, she rested her head on my shoulder.
“I don’t know. All this research is stressing me out. Weddings are expensive, and we have other financial priorities.”
“Like saving for a house after we pay off our loans,” I said, remembering the budget and financial plan we created when we first moved back in with each other.
“Now that I think about, I can’t believe I didn’t realize sooner how fucking gay I was.
