Chapter Seven

Max didn’t know what the hell was going on in his own pack, lately. He’d just heard the news that Zane had finally given in and bitten his mate on the shoulder, which had caused another panic attack and a visit from George, and then the doctor had to tell him about his visit to Joey.

“Mr. Green was unconscious when I went to see him, and he’ll need another check-up, but he’s resting well for now.”

Max growled. “I should’ve asked someone better, someone with more patience to watch him.”

“Well, it’s too late for that now. You gave Dean a chew toy, and now he doesn’t want to let it go.”

“Hmm,” Max said, turning to pace. It helped him think. “Don’t ever let him hear you say that. Or anyone. No one around here really likes the dog references.”

Max didn’t either, but he put up with it because he owed George, George had been important to getting them all out, and important to keeping Smith and Ryland alive when they’d been injured during the escape.

And he was important now because their pack needed someone with trained medical experience. It was definitely helpful when it came to Todd and the baby.

“He’s being too rough with Joey. If anything happens to him, Todd will never forgive me.” Max sighed. “I should fight him for the kid. Joey would be safer under my care.”

“You already have your hands full with the pack, and your mate, and the child that you adopted. You’re never going to be able to keep that human safe from Hunter and Phoenix.”

“I keep you safe from them.”

“You forgetting this?” George asked, lifting the sleeve of his right shirt, exposing the bite scars that pockmarked his skin.

“I didn’t forget,” Max said, though it had taken many months before he’d been able to convince his idiot pack to leave George alone, that they needed him. Sometimes, his men still had a tendency to play rough.

But George had survived and persevered. Considering he’d saved the lives of Smith and Ryland, that at least meant that both of those wolves were also willing to watch over George, making sure that Phoenix’s need to get his revenge against all humans didn’t get the better of him, but it was still a strained environment.”

“Keep the kid with Dean. To be honest, I think they’re good for each other.”

“Good for each other?” Max lifted a brow, then got angry. “You just told me that Dean told you that he almost let Joey drown in the river.”

“But he didn’t. I don’t think he actually would have let anything happen to him.”

“If it were your life in place of Joey’s, would you be making that gamble?”

George lowered his sleeve, and then looked away for about a half a second, as though needing to think about it. “Yes, I think so.”

Max shook his head. “All right, I’ll bite. Why? Why do you think they’re so perfect for each other?”
