Chapter Eleven

After Alec and I started Dark Matter Security, it took less than a year to fill our bank accounts with more money than I ever thought I would have in my life. Alec had already built a pretty large cushion from his contract jobs before deciding to do this. Of course, he used a large chunk of it to start the business. Over the past fifteen years, we’ve not only made back that money spent, but so much more.

Even with the large sum of money burning a hole in my accounts, I still preferred doing things myself. I fix my own car, I don’t have a personal chef or any bullshit like that. I refused to become one of those assholes who uses money to do everything for me.

But right now? Sitting in the middle of my living room floor trying to understand these damn directions for a fucking coffee table? I really wish I had used some of that money to pay someone else to put this shit together.

“Are you sure this is the right piece?” I ask, scowling at the piece of distressed wood in my hands.

“That’s what the sticker says.” Nicole’s eyes are glued to the instructions on the floor next to her and I can tell she’s getting just as irritated as I am. It already took almost an hour just to put the bookshelf together.

When the delivery guys dropped off all the furniture, I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of stuff Nicole ended up buying. I wouldn’t have been surprised if she just stuck to the bare minimum. But not only did she buy a couch -yellow of course- and a chair, she got a new recliner to replace the one I have. Plus, she got a coffee table, two bookshelves, and an entertainment center for the living room. She also got a kitchen table set and matching stools for the breakfast bar.

She looked nervous when she told me she also ordered a new bedroom set that would be here next week. I didn’t give a shit that I already have one because I only got it out of necessity. I’m sure we won’t have any issues finding someone who could use it.

“Maybe the stickers got messed up.” Her face is scrunched up in both confusion and frustration. I told her I would do it all myself, but she thought it would be fun to do it together. I’m thinking she might be regretting that decision.

“How about we take a break?” I set the offending piece down on the floor and turn to Nicole with a smile. “I have something I want to show you, then I thought we could go get some lunch.”

“What do you have to show me?” She doesn’t even bother trying to hide her suspicion. But there’s something playful in it that just feels refreshing as hell.

I climb to my feet and hold my hands out for my woman. It’s so fucking elating that she doesn’t even hesitate or question it before placing her hands in mine.
