Chapter

Twenty-Four

MAVERICK

It finally happened. I knew something was coming and I’d say our house burning down and a body that shouldn’t have been there being found inside qualifies a big something.

On the one hand, I’m glad that it happened. Obviously, I’m not happy about that something being our house burning down, but I am glad that the not knowing what’s going to happen part is over.

It’s been annoying the fuck out of me.

As I ease my foot down on the gas, pulling away slower than normal so as not to draw any more of the cops’ attention to us, I look up into the mirror again and meet Dylan’s curious gaze.

“I don’t know who’s back there, but someone definitely is,” I say. “I’ve been seeing little flashes of movement between the trees all day. If someone wanted to watch us, though, why not just watch with the rest of the fucking school? Why watch from beyond the treeline? It’s suspicious. I doubt they’re still there, but you never know. We might find something we can use to figure out who it was.”

“If you’re hoping for a cigarette butt with DNA on it, that usually only happens in the movies,” Colton jokes, settling into his seat beside me, but despite his easygoing tone, I can see that he’s suspicious now too. His eyes are slightly too narrow and he’s got that restless energy pouring off him in waves.

“Let’s go check it out,” Dylan agrees, on alert himself as he turns toward the window and scans the trees beyond it.

Phoenix looks at Skye. “Are you okay after all that? Not the cops, I mean. I’m sure your cop asked you all about us and then made sure you knew you could reach out to her if you ever need to, but I’m referring to your conversation with Ava. It looked intense.”

“It was,” she says, but her voice is quiet. Almost like she’s not sure how to approach the conversation and is still thinking it over. “I invited her to come stay with us this weekend.”

“What?!” Colton bolts upright, no longer leaning back in his seat as he twists around to face her instead. “Why the hell would you do that? We don’t invite many people there, baby. It’s not even registered in our names. We bought it through a company that belongs to a shell corporation that–” He shakes his head. “Okay, that’s not really the point. The point is that I don’t understand why you’d invite someone we don’t trust into a place you know we keep to ourselves.”

She sniffs, but doesn’t back down. “Oh, really? Because you were okay with inviting all those women you fucked there. Why can’t I invite a friend?”

“It’s not like our friends were given an address,” he says, his tone dripping with exasperation. “We were way more careful than that. We drove them out there ourselves and made sure we took confusing routes. It was always at night and there aren’t exactly a lot of identifiable landmarks in the fucking dark.
