MAVERICK
It finally happened. I knew something was coming and Iâd say our house burning down and a body that shouldnât have been there being found inside qualifies a big something.
On the one hand, Iâm glad that it happened. Obviously, Iâm not happy about that something being our house burning down, but I am glad that the not knowing whatâs going to happen part is over.
Itâs been annoying the fuck out of me.
As I ease my foot down on the gas, pulling away slower than normal so as not to draw any more of the copsâ attention to us, I look up into the mirror again and meet Dylanâs curious gaze.
âI donât know whoâs back there, but someone definitely is,â I say. âIâve been seeing little flashes of movement between the trees all day. If someone wanted to watch us, though, why not just watch with the rest of the fucking school? Why watch from beyond the treeline? Itâs suspicious. I doubt theyâre still there, but you never know. We might find something we can use to figure out who it was.â
âIf youâre hoping for a cigarette butt with DNA on it, that usually only happens in the movies,â Colton jokes, settling into his seat beside me, but despite his easygoing tone, I can see that heâs suspicious now too. His eyes are slightly too narrow and heâs got that restless energy pouring off him in waves.
âLetâs go check it out,â Dylan agrees, on alert himself as he turns toward the window and scans the trees beyond it.
Phoenix looks at Skye. âAre you okay after all that? Not the cops, I mean. Iâm sure your cop asked you all about us and then made sure you knew you could reach out to her if you ever need to, but Iâm referring to your conversation with Ava. It looked intense.â
âIt was,â she says, but her voice is quiet. Almost like sheâs not sure how to approach the conversation and is still thinking it over. âI invited her to come stay with us this weekend.â
âWhat?!â Colton bolts upright, no longer leaning back in his seat as he twists around to face her instead. âWhy the hell would you do that? We donât invite many people there, baby. Itâs not even registered in our names. We bought it through a company that belongs to a shell corporation thatââ He shakes his head. âOkay, thatâs not really the point. The point is that I donât understand why youâd invite someone we donât trust into a place you know we keep to ourselves.â
She sniffs, but doesnât back down. âOh, really? Because you were okay with inviting all those women you fucked there. Why canât I invite a friend?â
âItâs not like our friends were given an address,â he says, his tone dripping with exasperation. âWe were way more careful than that. We drove them out there ourselves and made sure we took confusing routes. It was always at night and there arenât exactly a lot of identifiable landmarks in the fucking dark.
