McCahon took a break from painting for a few weeks after the Urewera paintings and Teaching aids, telling McLeavey so while also recalling his visit to Muriwai: ‘I’m going to close down & do some gardening for a few weeks. I’ve painted so much this year I need a rest … Anne and I remember you sitting on the Muriwai cliffs – I must say I was a bit scared but you did see the joy of the place.’50 McCahon made a drawing, McLeavey sat here, showing beads, birds, Moby Dick and the cliffs of fall, which has become well known in its own right.
