Moira kept an eye on Aiden as she herded Sabrina’s kids into getting the stuff collected. He’d gotten a call while she was upstairs collecting the girls, but he’d moved away from the stairs when she come back down. The set of his shoulders suggested he dealt with something he didn’t like, and the energy in her house changed from fun to intense, especially around him.

“Do you think Mommy and Darius had a good time last night?” Tansy looked up at Moira, her eyes full of concern.

“I would think so. Why do you ask?”

“Because every time she did it with Tommy, she would come home sad.”

Moira tilted her head. “How do you know that?”

“I could feel it in here.” She thumped herself in the chest with her little fist. “I don’t like it when Mommy’s sad.”

Moira nodded as she helped Tansy zip up her backpack. I think we have a budding empath here. “I wouldn’t like it if my mom was sad, either.”

“Beltane makes her sad when she has to be with boys.”

I seriously don’t think Darius is a boy.

“I hope that’s not the case this time. She seems to really like Darius.”

“Me, too.” Holly dropped her backpack beside Tansy’s. “He helped us make Beltane wreaths and apple cider.”

“That sounds delicious. Your mom is very lucky to have such a helper.” She shot a look over her shoulder at Aiden as he stood, still talking on the phone while he looked out the window.

“I think you have a good helper, too.” Tansy followed her gaze toward Aiden.

Moira raised an eyebrow. “Oh yeah?”

“Yeah. He decorated your house yesterday, remember?”

“Oh, that’s right. I’ll have to make sure I thank him.”

“Give him a kiss. I think boys like that. At least Darius does when Mommy does it.”

Just then, Sabrina knocked on the door. Oh, thank goodness. She didn’t think she could handle more personal details about Sabrina and her new man. She set their backpacks aside and opened the door.

“Hey, Sabrina. Good to see—” Her voice died at the sight of her friend looking as if the cat had dragged and vomited her up in a nasty hairball. “Good glory. Are you all right?”

Sabrina dredged up a smile, but it only illustrated the puffiness combined with the dark circles around her eyes. “Yeah, I’m all right. How are the kids?”

“They’re good.” Moira frowned as she stepped aside. “Are you sure you’re okay? Do you want some coffee?”

Sabrina shook her head and turned her attention to her daughters.

“Mommy! How was Beltane?”

Tansy distracted her mother for a short time as Moira stood back to watch the other woman. Something had happened. She could read it in every line of Sabrina’s body, but her friend never let her attention from her daughters slip.

“Mommy, when we get home, can we go roller skating with Darius again?” Holly shrugged into her coat.

Sabrina stiffened, but managed a small smile. “I’ll think about it. I’m pretty tired from last night. Do you have all your things?”

“Yes, Moira helped us.” Tansy pulled on her coat.
