Cleric doesn’t touch me or even speak to me during the duration of the boat ride. It’s only about fifteen minutes, but we were merely coasting down the river. The men dock the boat, but I still don’t see a house, only a stone pathway shrouded by trees and leading uphill. The men don’t leave the boat. Only Cleric and I begin walking up the pathway. We finally come to a clearing, and nestled there in the center is a decent-sized elegant cottage that looks straight out of a fairy tale. A smile tugs at the corner of my lips because despite it all, it is charming. If I’m going to be in a prison, at least it’s a charming and enchanting one.

“I’ve never known luxury,” I confess in a quiet voice.

“It’s hardly what I’d call luxury. It’s comfortable. But I’m glad you approve.”

I’m not sure if he’s being sarcastic. “It’s gorgeous. You live here alone?”

“No other prisoners or wives, if that’s what you’re wondering. You’ll have me all to yourself.”

I stop walking and cross my arms. “You don’t have to be such an ass. Can’t we try to get along?”

“All you’re doing is obsessing over my wealth.” His tone is one of complete repulsion. “How nice my home is. I know what you’re thinking—all this for one man? I despise discussing materialistic bullshit. But I get it. I’m sure it is a considerable upgrade for you.” He seems to have grown larger out here in the eerie darkness. The area no longer feels enchanting but menacing.

I’ve lost basically everything except my pride. Straightening my back, I point my finger at his chest. “This was all your doing, remember? I didn’t arrange this deal.”

“You’re father, Pa”—he mimics the way I say his name—“did this. Why I felt the need to save you is beyond me.”

I cross my arms. “You expect me to fall to my knees and praise you as my hero?”

His golden-honey eyes shine through the darkness as he tilts his head and stares me down. “I expect you to fall to your knees, dear, but not to praise me as your hero. Heroes have morals. You’ve made a deal with someone worse than the devil. I’m no fallen angel. I come straight from pure darkness and debauchery.” He allows me a moment to soak all that in before adding, “So, no. I don’t expect you to praise me as your hero. You’ll be on your knees to worship me as your husband.”

I shiver at the idea of what’s going to happen once I cross the threshold into the house. What kind of sexual tastes does he have? My soul is raging war against my lustful body. I want to cry for wanting him to do every depraved thought imaginable to me, those rough hands demanding and claiming my pleasure. There’s no part of me that thinks Cleric would hurt me. He might strip me of my dignity, though.

His arm sweeps behind my knees, and his other one captures my upper back as I’m thrown off balance.
