Epilogue
Two months later
Mike would never tire of seeing Gina in her starched KCPD uniform. She walked into the CAPT clinic with takeout and drinks to share lunch in his office and his heart did a familiar tumble of love and pride. She carried herself with confidence when she wore the blue-and-black with her badge, gear belt and holstered gun. And her sweet figure filled it out in a way that was anything but mannish.
He waited while she greeted Troy and leaned in to give him a hug. Mike dutifully raised his gaze to her dark eyes when she turned to include him in her announcement. âDid I tell you Iâve already got three people signed up to take my self-defense training class here? Vicki Bismarck, Frannie and Sylvie. Lupe said sheâs going to bake cookies and bring them down to watch. Says maybe sheâs not so old that she canât learn a thing or two.â
âLupeâs baking cookies?â Troy raised his hand. âAnything I can do to help with your class?â When Mike and Gina laughed, Troy pressed his hand against his heart. âHey, Iâm serious. Sheâs brought food to each of the sessions where Iâve been helping her work on her balance issues.â
Mike took the bag from Gina before teasing his friend. âYou know thatâs not how we get our bills paid around here, right?â
âYeah, but donât tell her that. That woman can cook.â
Although Gina smiled much more often these days, she was serious for a moment. âSo, itâs okay if I set up my class here? I know itâs not physical therapy, but you are in the neighborhood.â
Mike read the agreement on Troyâs face and nodded. âI think feeling safe and building self-confidence all fits into that wellness goal we strive for. Just let me know when and Iâll schedule the gym for you.â
Frannie came out of her office carrying a computer pad. âAs long as you leave Monday and Wednesday nights open. Thatâs when Colin Cho and Frank McBride are coming in for their PT.â
Mike couldnât deny the recent upturn in business. Or the credit Gina deserved for helping him. âI wouldnât have thought youâd be the best PR person. But youâve brought in a half dozen new clients from KCPD.â
Gina shrugged. âCops have a lot of back and joint issues. I just suggested they come here.â
Troy rolled his chair up beside Frannie. âHey, you signed up for Ginaâs class? You gonna wear those tight shorts you had on the last time you worked out?â
âTroy!â Her freckles disappeared beneath a healthy blush.
âLike Iâm not gonna notice.â Troy grabbed Frannie around the waist and pulled her into his lap before wheeling them both into the gym. âCâmon, Sunshine. Letâs get you warmed up.â
Once they were alone in the hallway, Gina smiled. âThey seem happy.â
âThey do.â Mike led her into his office and set lunch out on his desk while Gina closed the door. âWhat about you, Tiger? Are you happy?â
âWhat do you think?â Gina was right there when he faced her.
