Chapter Eleven

Danny leaned against his car feeling like shit.

He hadn’t meant to lash out at Paul, not like that. The fight in the backyard was far from sexy. He was still irritable from the cock tease in the car, to say nothing of his father’s bullshit that could bring the asshole out of Danny on a good day. Now he was left hating himself because he’d taken his anger out on the one person who wouldn’t beat him—literally.

He took a long drag off his cigarette, and looked at Paul talking to his new buddy Frank who had walked them to the gate. Though he didn’t have anything to offer to the conversation, he’d been watching like a voyeur, studying Frank’s reaction as it went from disbelief, to horror, and then finally to a huge sense of relief as Paul continued to talk to him. Their conversation ended with Frank shaking Paul’s hand enthusiastically, clapping his shoulder in affection, apparently oblivious to the way Paul tensed.

Danny wasn’t real sure what Paul was promising to do, or what sort of miracle he was hoping to pull out of his bag of tricks to save Frank’s business. The strange thing was, Danny was half tempted to go tell Frank that Paul never failed at anything he set his mind to. If he was promising to save his business, one way or another, Paul would.

Danny flicked his cigarette out into the street as Paul waved goodbye, his smile strained while he opened the gate. Knowing Frank was out of earshot, Danny said to Paul as he approached the car, “Stop being friendly if you hate people being nice to you.”

“I can’t go through life being antisocial just because I have a few issues with affection,” Paul said in response. “I need to work on it.”

Danny got in the car rather than respond, because it wasn’t a lie.

He did need to work on it.

When Paul got in on the passenger side, he closed the door like he was shutting out the real world too as he asked, “Morning Street?”

“Fuck, yes.” Danny was even more done with reality than Paul was. “I’m gonna let you suck it until your jaw hurts.”

Paul gave him a smile. “But I like the hurt.”

“Then lucky you,” Danny said as he started the car.
