Chapter Six

Morning arrived. A dim, gray light cast life onto a snow-soaked town that was sitting under a heavy blanket of snow. Not a single person was out and moving. For the time being, Snow Falls was completely snowed under.

The residents of Snow Falls were not concerned. They were used to heavy snowstorms. Folks simply stayed inside their homes and snuggled up to a warm fireplace. Soon the plows would be moving and life would start to defrost, as always. There was no rush to move the snow and dig out frozen trucks. The blanket of heavy snow covering Snow Falls offered a peaceful hug that transformed the town into a sleepy, beautiful winter wonderland that the outside world could not touch or harm. No one was in a hurry to escape the peaceful slumber enveloping their home...except for Bethany Lights. Bethany was anxious to catch a deadly killer.

“Mac will have the plows moving soon,” Andrew yawned, rubbing a face that was obviously very exhausted. “This is Snow Falls, Bethany. Whenever we get snowed under, we wait a while and eventually Mac clears the roads.”

“Mac has a ten-man team. Snow Falls has numerous roads,” Conrad pointed out, fighting back a yawn. “The city roads are cleared first, and then Mac and his team head out into the county. It takes time.”

“Blimey, it takes all day,” Amanda complained, chugging down a cup of hot coffee. “And stop with the city and county talk, you bloke. Snow Falls isn’t like some town in the lower states. Snow Falls is special...connected...one heart. I don’t like to hear you break my home down into technical terms.”

“Are we a bit grumpy?” Conrad teased Amanda.

Amanda raised a fist into the air. “Don’t make me punch you into last year!” she warned Conrad.

Conrad rolled his sleepy eyes. Amanda was something else. “Alright, alright, calm down. I’m sorry.”

Bethany ignored Amanda and Conrad’s war. Her mind was focused on Edwin McCrandy. “Detective Spencer, I read the note you found at John McCrandy’s home. I’m in very serious trouble.”

“We have to have the handwriting on the note analyzed,” Conrad pointed out. “I seriously doubt if John McCrandy wrote that note, Bethany. Anyone can try to forge another person’s handwriting.”

“What about my perfume?” Bethany asked, staring at the front door of the police station. I placed the perfume Amanda gave me for Thanksgiving on the nightstand in my bedroom. Someone was in my bedroom...in my cabin. And I wasn’t even aware of it. “When I left home yesterday morning, the perfume Amanda gave me was sitting on my nightstand. I wonder if the perfume is still there?”

“We’ll check,” Andrew replied. Boy, was he ever sleepy. Andrew was the type of man that needed a solid eight hours of sleep each night or he was no good the next day. Sometimes, police work stunk rotten eggs.

“The note John McCrandy supposedly wrote contained the names of Greg Cranmore and Brian Amerson. Supposedly, John McCrandy was writing me a warning note, telling me to leave town until the heat died down.
