Chapter 16

Shay

The message light on her room phone was lit when Shay woke the next morning. Thankfully, it was the front desk telling her that someone could bring up her bag when she was ready. She’d slept fitfully but was too anxious to go back to bed. As soon as the bag came, she took a long, hot shower, willing the water to rinse away her worries.

Wrapped in a towel, she emptied out the bag and wished she was an over-packer. Since this was supposed to be an overnight trip, she only had one spare change of clothes. Her pulse accelerated. She couldn’t go back to her house in Lake Placid for her clothes, or her furniture, or her tools…another life she’d have to leave behind.

Her legs wobbled, and she sank onto the edge of the bed. She wasn’t going to be able to continue her jewelry business. He’d look for it. The weight that settled on her chest became heavier the more she thought, and her breathing quickened. She stood and crossed to the windows, desperate for more air.

She flung back the curtains, and her rising panic evaporated. The view was incredible. Fresh, golden light of a new day stretched across rolling hills and a lush green forest as far as she could see. The forest was interrupted only by the lake they’d crossed last night. Below, a vast lawn sprawled out from the hotel. There was a free-form pool, remnants of a bonfire, and a huge courtyard. Flowers were everywhere, in every color imaginable. It seemed too beautiful to be real.

Her breathing returned to normal, and she pulled herself together. Stressing about what she couldn’t control wasn’t going to help. She needed to move forward. To come up with a plan. She had anonymity for now, but there was no telling how long that would last. She needed to figure out where to go next. First step was coffee and food.

When the elevator opened on the main floor, she stepped into what Roman had called the Great Hall. It was a cavernous room with clusters of oversized furniture running down both sides. Daylight flooded in through floor to ceiling windows, and the impressive front double door leading out to the porch was propped open.

As she crossed the dark hardwood floor, she spotted the entrance to the main restaurant, Sueno, and veered in that direction. Inside, a hostess greeted her, then led her across the half-full room to a table beside a window. The restaurant had a simple elegance with white tablecloths and a gentle flow to the layout that angled toward the kitchen.

That was where it was unique. Instead of being hidden from view, the kitchen was on full display behind glass windows that allowed patrons to watch the chefs like a show. It mesmerized Shay as she sipped her coffee and waited for her food.

When it arrived, her omelet was perfectly cooked with just the right amount of melted cheese in each forkful. She ate every last bite then signed the check to the room.
