Ciaran

Adriana looks even more stunning when she’s surrounded by men—mine and Marcello’s—than she looked in my bedroom, and even though I know I should be paying attention to my party, being a good host, I find myself looking for her, glancing around the room until I see her.

Every time my eyes land on her, I can’t help but stare.

If I hadn’t invited her father and some of his men, I could in theory spend a little bit of time with her. I could at least keep her at my side through the night, on the excuse of not letting the other guys in my employ get close to her—though my real reasons might not be so pure.

“I think we have some time before people get really restless,” David Byrne says, shifting on his feet next to me. I bring myself back to the topic at hand, which is of course the whole ridiculous situation.

“It’s not a bad deal for either Family,” I point out. “With just me running things … it’d be good to have a kid. Dad wanted me to start a family of my own soon.”

“A family to help run the Family?”

I chuckle. “And once things smooth out a bit, everyone wins.”

“That’s if they smooth out,” David points out.

I have to agree that he’s got a point there. The two groups—my guys and the D’Antonios—are not exactly mixing, and even though I haven’t even thought about asserting my new role as the leader of the Italians, I know that there’s likely to be a big fuss and a lot of blood when I do.

You could just not do that, I think. Just let Marcello run his businesses, wait for him to die, and help Adriana consolidate her position. But I shake the thought off as soon as it comes. I don’t trust her yet. Nor should I. She’s an enemy captive. Nothing more, nothing less.

“Things shake out after a while, and in the meantime nobody is killing each other,” I say. “We can all get back to business.”

“Business is pretty damn good right now,” David agrees. “And the other families are happy we aren’t killing each other for a bit. A little quiet will take care of that news story, too.”

I nod. I spot one of my guys, who I set on a special assignment, coming towards me. I step away from David. He may be one of my top underbosses, but there are certain things I want to keep close to the vest. Eamon walks towards me but takes his time, not drawing attention to himself.

“Did you manage to get anything?”

Eamon shrugs. “He didn’t seem to want to talk to her much,” he tells me. “He asked some questions about her progress, but I couldn’t figure out if there was anything really big going on.”

“What did she tell him?”

Eamon grins. “She said she can’t do much in the way of getting any other information while she’s stuck here, and you of course wouldn’t trust her with family secrets only knowing her a few days.
