1. Low levels of income

The main sources of income for people in this village are agricultural production and assistance from children. The survey showed that the financial assistance that children might provide in a year is, however, no more than RMB 500 in the majority of cases. What’s more, only a tiny percentage of children provide any money at all. This village is in a hilly region, so that only some of the land can be farmed, and farmed plots are irregularly shaped in addition to being tiny and dispersed. It is fundamentally impossible to farm them with mechanized equipment. In some areas, there is no irrigation at all, so people just rely on rainwater. Older people generally farm between 1 and 3 mu of land [roughly between one-fifth and two-fifths of one acre]. After deducting the costs of seed and fertilizer, the net income from 1 mu of land comes to only around RMB 400. When you add in any assistance from children and government transfer payments, older people in this village have a household annual income of roughly RMB 1,000.
