4.3.3Reasons for a decline in Japan’s sense of affinity with China

The survey questionnaires showed that, compared to the United States, Germany, India, and Russia, only 4% of the Japanese liked China. When interviewees were asked about this, one scholar pointed out that Japanese people’s feelings toward China were closely tied to the frequent crises between the two countries in recent years. The Japanese people’s sense of affinity with China decreases every time a crisis occurs, and goes up after the crisis is addressed. This appears clearly indicated by the data from opinion polls conducted by the Cabinet Office of Japan since 1978. The solid line in Figure 4.8 represents the proportion of the Japanese reporting a sense of affinity with China, while the dotted line stands for the proportion of those having no sense of affinity.
