Chapter Ten

Marta updated her social media with backstage pictures of the performance. As she paced at the locked back door to Ginardo’s, her loud sigh lasted the length of the patio. Bryson was taking his time riding that cart back. She may have to give up on meeting the others at the bar.

More pacing until her phone vibrated. She read the text from Dean.

—Thanks for loaning your car. I’m at the bar with Senona, Tom, Beast. Kimberly just left. Pick you up?—

She texted back kisses. She’d let him know later when she needed a ride. Where the heck was Bryson? She added gloss to her lips.

The clank of a bike chain sounded. Marta checked the hem of her clinging top. Low cut at the back, it just met the top of her mauve stretch pants. Bryson liked that color tone against her skin. Relaxing her shoulders and positioning so he’d see her back first, she watched for him to ride up.

He stopped and stared. “You’re here.”

She gave a sultry shrug. “Surprise.”

Bryson parked the cart near the door. “Yeah.”

“Glad to see me?” Now Marta was the one surprised, by his silence.

He checked the bike and secured it with the bike lock. “Should I be?”

Definitely not the reaction she’d planned for. Getting past his hurt may be harder than stealing the limelight on stage. Hard, but not impossible. “I’ve been waiting awhile. I couldn’t let the night end without seeing you.”

Bryson confronted her with a hard stare and cold, gruff voice, “I was at the park, watching your play. I hoped you’d see me there.”

Determined to meet his challenge with an irresistible image, Marta approached him with downcast eyes. She wrapped her arms around herself, as if in pain. “I wanted to go to you. I wanted that more than anything, but I had to see you with no one around.” She created a dramatic pause. “Bryson, I think we made a big mistake.”

She hid her nervousness when Bryson showed his signature tilt of the head and squint of his left eye and said, “We? We did?”

Marta took his hand. It was damp with sweat. “We go together like a curtain call goes with a standing ovation. Why would we ever break up? You’ve always been there for me. You’ve been at so many of my performances, always applauding. I saw you tonight. Could you feel how I saw you?”

She moved close and embraced him. He stood still, then his arms slowly wrapped around her. They stood together, cheek to cheek. He whispered, “You were a vision tonight.”

She stood on tiptoe and lightly kissed his lips. Bryson took a step back and held onto her shoulders. “I need to put everything away and get changed, then let’s talk. Come in the kitchen and wait for me.”

Marta gave him a pout. He laughed and put his hand under her chin to see her upturned face. “You won’t have to wait long. Come on.”

He opened the door, and she walked in. “What am I supposed to do while you do all this ice cream stuff?”

Bryson put his hands on his hips.
