of greys ; for a large part of his most notable production is done in modulated shades of this colour, heightened and made luminous here and there by carefully calculated touches of green, yellow, red, or violet. His figures are drawn in a manner less solid than Kiyonaga's; as in Plate 45, the lines seem tormented and strained into arabesques of peculiar and restless bdauty. The harmony of his colour is kept by this sharp intensity of line-work from sinking into mere sweetness and flatness.

These figures of Shunman, sketched with the curious uneasiness of line of which I speak, stand before backgrounds of equal strangeness. The landscapes seem instinct with an obscure life; the Talking Oak of Dodona was never more haunted than are they. His great six-sheet composition, " The Six Tamagawa," is positively disturbing in the feeling of supernatural forces that it awakens. As Fenollosa says : " Everything he does has a strange touch.
