CHAPTER TEN

DAVID SCHWARTZ

“Sir, I don’t usually comment on your personal life, but I feel it necessary,” Rodney whispers, his gaze wandering to the rearview mirror. I don’t have to follow his line of sight to know he’s staring at Vanessa and the girls huddled in the backseat.

“Not now, Rodney,” I warn.

He leans close, his tone taking a frantic edge as he continues to whisper, “But, son, you picked up a family at the hospital. You do realize how bizarre that is, don’t you?”

Clenching my jaw, I turn to him. “I didn’t pick up anyone.”

“You’re sending me for pizza,” he accuses. I narrow my eyes, not grasping his point. I send him a lot of places, for all a lot of things. Yesterday it was my dry cleaning, today it’s pizza. “You don’t eat pizza.”

“The kids have to eat something and all I have at my place is grilled chicken and protein powder.” Nothing kid friendly for sure. I flick a piece of lint from the sleeve of my suit. “Besides, it’s Pizza Fridays.”

Whatever that is.

“Just tell me you didn’t pick up a widow.”

God, he really thinks low of me.

“She’s not a widow.”

Rodney’s hands tighten around the wheel. “I hope you know what you’re doing,” he hisses.

Oh, I have no fucking idea what I’m doing, but I’m not about to share that with Rodney. Instead, I decide to drop it. I have no desire to fight with him, and I rather he not quit. The man has been more like a father to me over the last few years than my actual father, his concern comes from a good place. That being said, he and I don’t see eye to eye on a lot of things. He’s a family man, with old school values and I’m a self-proclaimed playboy with no aspirations to ever be a husband or a father. Some things are better left unsaid and until I get a handle on whatever this is, it’s one of those things.

He pulls up to my building a short while later. I get out and open the back door, helping Vanessa wrangle the girls and their bookbags. I lead them inside, stopping to get my mail from the doorman who looks at me quite the same way as Rodney did when I emerged from the hospital with a grief-stricken woman and two kids in tow.

“You live here?” Vanessa asks, breaking her silence as we cross the marble floors and head for the elevators. I jab the button and turn to meet her gaze.

“Yeah, my office isn’t too far.” I study her for a moment, trying to read the expression on her face, but I draw a blank.

“This place is like a hotel!” Cecily cheers. “Do you have room service?”

I chuckle. “No room service, but I think I might bring that up at the next meeting.” The elevator doors open, and I step aside, waiting for the three of them to enter the elevator first.

“Can I push the button?”

“Sure,” I say as I tip my chin toward the panel.
