âWeâre here.â I jolted awake at the sound of Nashâs voice and the gentle shake of my shoulder. He must have anticipated me reaching for a weapon, because his hand blocked me from getting to my gun.
Trust. Itâs as foreign to me as the American dream of having a white picket fence with two point five kids, yet somehow, I trusted Nash enough that I allowed myself to close my eyes next to him. Sex and sleeping with someone arenât synonymous for me. Iâve had sex, but I havenât actually slept with someone in the same room since I left The Companyâs training facility and my friends so long ago. Maybe it was the stress of everything, or the lack of rest since Halo disappeared. Either way, Iâd let my guard down enough to fall asleep and trust the man beside me with my life.
âWhereâs here?â I asked around a yawn, rolling my neck to ease the tension and stiffness that had built there on our trip.
âWest Virginia,â he answered quietly. I saw Ghost walk past the truck, a heavy duffle lifted over his shoulder. âThis is a safehouse of sorts.â
âSome safehouse,â I said, admiring the beautiful home in front of me. The two-story log cabin was gorgeous, like something out of a magazine. âMy safehouses werenât houses at all, just ratty hotels.â
âI know,â he grunted. âThe Company wanted all of you in low key places if things went bad so they could blame it on gang violence or some shit.â He opened his door and grabbed my bag from the back, along with his. âCome on. Weâve got work to do.â The abrupt change of topic was the only emotion he showed for The Company. Anger clung to him and vibrated the air around him. Reading people was part of my job, and had I been anyone else, Iâd never have seen the crack in his mask. He was furious.
Halo. I shoved my door open and hopped out of the truck. Yes, we had work to do. I had to find her. Everything in me said she was still alive, so I refused to consider any other scenario. I needed to use a computer to contact the girls through our email. Realistically, I didnât see getting away from the guys to go check messages, so Iâd have to wait and bide my time until I could use a computer alone. It wasnât that I didnât trust Nash, I did, but the girls were at risk if I misjudged him. I was dead, anyway. There was no doubt in my mind that The Company would send someone after me for killing their cleaner and helping Nash get away. It wasnât a matter of if, but when.
Nash held the door open for me as I walked through the threshold. After he shut and locked it behind us, he opened a hidden panel on the wall and hit the button inside. All around, black panels slid over the windows and the doors.
