Jules led them around one corner and then another and then another, which put them on pedestrian-only Rue Montorgueil in the First Arrondissement. Known as an international foodie paradise, the cheese shops, fishmongers, patisseries and restaurants serving food from every corner of the world beckoned.

After much discussion, they chose a bustling Thai restaurant and took two seats side by side at the counter facing the open kitchen. Zoe opened her laptop and called up a lighting placement program to show him the changes she wanted to do.

“Comes in handy, doesn’t it?” he teased again about her use of the computer-aided design, raising an eyebrow in a mock-gloating manner that was adorable. She begged herself to stop reminiscing about that kiss the other night, the one he’d promised never to repeat. Yet, she found herself wishing he would.

If only he wasn’t sitting so close to her. Shoulder to shoulder, they both occasionally looked up to watch the chefs in front of them flipping noodles over scorching high heat, the finished products lush with jewels of diced meats and colorful vegetables.

Jules’s long muscular arm pressed against hers as they huddled over the laptop screen. Her whole being buzzed when she was close to him. And as they dug into their delicious pad Thai, the rich peanut flavor somehow added to the sensuality. It was a combination of sensations that made her almost light-headed, and had the power to make the loud and crowded restaurant fade into the distance of her consciousness. Zoe wanted to lick the sweet sauce from Jules’s lips. Wanted to drop into his arms and press herself against his solid chest. Wanted them to hold onto each other like there was no tomorrow. No one on earth had ever made her feel that way. She hoped nobody ever would. It was really too much.

“I’m not a fool,” Jules said as they took a stroll after dinner. “I know that there’s an artistic element to what you do. If I didn’t appreciate that, I wouldn’t need a designer. I’d simply let the computer make all of the decisions.”

They approached the nearby Musée du Louvre. Closed for the evening, crowds still mulled about photographing the world’s most famous museum under the moon’s glow. Originally a castle, with construction that began in the twelfth century, it became a museum in the 1700s. The campus, its enormous main courtyard and the glass-and-steel pyramid that stood at its center, was instantly recognizable.

“You told me you fell in love with design via a sofa. Did you take art history in school?” Jules asked.

“Of course.”

“What kind of child were you?”

Zoe gulped. It was still hard for her to discuss anything about her past without missing her parents so much that the anguish threatened to knock her to the ground. “I suppose I was a happy enough kid. As much as you can be with three older brothers.”

“Was your parents’ furniture shop successful?”

“Define success.”

“Touché.”

“They made a living in a small town where there wasn’t much opportunity.
