When they got back to Desmond's place, Caleb sensed something unusual right away. He couldn't place the feeling until they started up the front steps. His hand curled instinctively around Desmond's arm, and his eyes darted from side to side.

"We're being watched," he informed him in a quiet voice.

"How do you know?" Desmond asked, looking around as well. Before Caleb had a chance to answer, a figure emerged from the shadows.

"Desmond, I need to talk to you." Jay was, thankfully, more appropriately attired than he had been at Lucius's house. His face, though, looked haggard in the dim porch light, and his voice sounded hoarse. He seemed to be fighting back tears. "You need to help me with Lucius. He's breathing down my neck. I just… I can't do the kind of things he wants me to."

Desmond exchanged a worried glance with Caleb. "I… understand there's some problem between the two of you," he said. "Honestly, though, I'm not sure what I could do. There are people on campus you can talk to. Counselors, deans, that sort of thing."

"Counselors? Did you listen to a word I just said? You can ask Caleb—he heard the whole confrontation in Lucius's office. Don't you understand? I'm afraid of what he might do to me."

"The guy's a jerk," Caleb agreed, choosing his words with care. "No one disputes that. But we need more proof that he's doing something unethical."

"Why don't you come in?" Desmond said. "You can tell us the whole story from beginning to end. Then we can decide what to do."

Beginning to panic, Jay looked around the darkened porch and hugged both arms protectively around himself. "I can't do that. You think I want to get killed? Remember what happened to Mike? He got off easy compared to what Lucius would do to me."

"I actually don't remember Mike. I wasn't here yet," Desmond said. "Like I said, if you want to come in and talk about it—"

"Fuck you!" Jay suddenly shouted. "Both of you! You're as bad as he is!" He paused to shoot Caleb a vicious look. "Not that I expected different from the likes of you. I guess Desmond wasn't much of a civilizing influence, after all."

He turned and ran, leaving the two of them to gape after him.

"The likes of you?" Desmond asked, blinked. "What did he mean by that?"

Caleb tried not to show that a fresh sweat had broken out on his face, and his hands had begun to shake.

"Guess he doesn't like me for some reason. You were right when you said we can't take what he says too seriously. He's unstable."

"Funny you'd say that, considering we only went over there because you were worried about Lucius blackmailing him."

Gritting his teeth, Caleb swept the porch with a cautious gaze just as Jay had done. "Let's talk inside."

Desmond began to get nervous, too. "Good idea." When they reached the apartment, he locked the front door and threw the deadbolt as well. Caleb had never seen him do that before.
