When Captain Rankin heard Kris’s story, he studied her a long moment.

“We’ve tried to keep an eye on Nickle, haven’t we, Steve?”

“Yes.”

“Why do you feel it’s Wilton and not Nickle, Miss McCall? Nickle’s here. Wilton is in D. C., a world away from us as far as connections go.”

“No,” Kris said. “He might be in D. C., but he has poisonous tentacles that can reach wherever he points. I know him.” She pressed her lips together. “Quite well.”

A frown set deep wrinkles into the captain’s high forehead. “You know him personally?”

She glanced at Steve who studied her intently. How could she go into lurid detail, give them all the sensational particulars of private observations? And the circumstances under which she became knowledgeable?

“I don’t know him personally. I know how politically corrupt he is, how artificially expansive he is, and although he might never commit murder himself, he’s capable of having it done without a second thought.”

“You base this on facts?”

Kris’s hands twisted together in her lap. The new dress had a tear along the hem, and mud changed the color from dark teal to brown. She should have stuck with her pantsuits.

“Yes, I do,” she said.

“What about it, Steve?” Captain Rankin leaned back and looked at his lieutenant.

“I suggest we bring Nickle in for questioning. After the medical examiner gets through with the body, and the results come in from the license tag check, we might have more to go on.”

“Twenty-four hours?”

“With any luck.”

“All right. Miss McCall, we’ll put you in a safe house for tonight. The motel might not be a good place for you to stay.”

“I’ll take care of it, Captain.”

Steve stood up and winced. His leg had stiffened. “Come on, Kris.”

They left by the side door, avoiding the congregated officers going over the few facts they had on the case and taking assignments for the next day.

Outside, they looked at Steve’s car the wrecker had brought in. Someone had Gerry-rigged wires so that he now had lights. The right front side was smashed from the lights to the back door. The trunk was gouged and lacked two inches closing.

“Will your insurance cover it?”

“Most of it.” Steve opened the driver’s door. “You’ll have to slide across.” He held her arm as she stepped up and sort of rolled over the console. She grunted as she bumped her hip, discovering a painful bruise she hadn’t known was there.

He slid in beside her, brushed his mouth over her cheek. “Cheer up, Honey. Tomorrow, you’ll be even more stiff.”
