Chapter Eight

Guy reeled, unable to believe Tommy’s words. The man was a carnivore. Worse, he was a liar. Had he lied to get a sale? To get him in the sack? He muttered under his breath, uncaring that the old woman at the bus stop stared at him as if he was crazy, or that she moved to the far end of the bench. “Damned liar! Can’t trust anyone.”

He kept going over their brief relationship, looking for missed clues but didn’t find any. Not only had Tommy eaten exclusively vegetarian food when they’d been together, he had cleared his house of meat. It had been a deliberate, well-planned ruse.

He chafed on the bus, then on the walk home. Trixie jumped on him at the door and licked his face, her tail wagging a hundred miles a minute.

“Hi, Dad! I’m home,” he called out as he snapped on her leash and disappeared out the front door. Exhausted from his ordeal, he abbreviated their usual walk, only going around the block the short way once instead of the long way a couple of times. He scrunched up his nose at the waft of barbecue that struck him in the face when he rounded the corner and he tried not to gag. Anxious to get away from it, he quickened his step.

When he arrived at his yard, he waved at the neighbor, still feeling bad that his dad had accused her father of trying to drive him crazy, maybe even kill him. It had been the most awkward situation in his life until this thing with Tommy. He didn’t know if he should cancel the real estate deal or just keep things strictly professional. Perhaps he could engage an attorney to deal with Tom on his behalf.

When he ventured farther into the house, he found everything from the kitchen cabinets and refrigerator stacked on the floor. Steak was burning unattended on the stove in another one of his pans, smoking heavily. He yanked the pan off the hot burner and turned it off. Then he peered into the empty living room and hallways. “What the hell? Dad!”

The bathroom door creaked open and his Dad poked out his ruffled head. “What you yelling about? I ain’t deaf.”

Exasperated, he jerked his thumb at the kitchen. “Why is the stove unattended? Why is everything on the floor?”

“I had to take a leak. I’m old. It happens a lot.” He took his time to wash his hands before he finally ambled out of the room.

Counting to ten slowly, Guy tried to tamp down his fuming temper. “Why are the cabinets empty? Why is everything on the floor?”

“I was working. The foreman told me to unload everything from the dock. Well, I did like I was told and I did a damned good job.” Glen didn’t blink.

It was all Guy could do not to blink, either. What was his old man talking about? What foreman? What job? His dad had been retired for almost fifteen years, then he’d worked at the graphics shop.
