Chapter Four - The Fire is the Thing

"The majority of my race do not feel that way, I hope you understand. Like most races, we do have our share of idiots," Duclet told us when we met in the morning.

I grinned at his words and Aquina giggled.

"I understand. Elves and fairies procreate differently and by choice only. For the race of man the act of sex is the only way to procreate. So it's understandable that there are some unenlightened souls who have problems with gender roles. I'm not saying I wouldn't like to hit the little turd for the things he said, but I have better things to do." Kaelee gazed at me with a sparkle in her eyes that reminded me of last night and I felt an answering warmth.

Duclet laughed heartily. He was a big man, taller than Kaelee. He had bulging muscles, thick blond hair and an equally thick blond beard. He was a strange sight next to Aquina who was my height, about four foot eight or so, with her dark locks that reflected indigo in certain lights and crystal blue wings. They were not together as Kaelee and I were. But they were partners and it worked well for them.

"So what do we do?" Kaelee asked. "Flae thought we could shadow the convoy and keep an eye on it, so we can do our duty regardless of what Haller says. He does not dictate to me what my duty is!" She sounded fierce and determined.

Duclet and Aquina nodded in agreement.

"You are correct Red Ranger. Could you use some support?"

We turned in fright, as if caught doing something wrong, only to see a short woman and an earth fairy approaching.

"You are Laybee, right? The ranger from the Dwarf city of Nantol?" Kaelee asked.

"Yes and this is Tillee, the messenger who brought news of the continuing fires. We've decided to find another way to help and figured you would be the best option," she said.

I hadn't often seen a female dwarf and tried to keep myself from staring. Long flaming red hair, wavy and pulled back at the sides, framing a cute, round face. She was a little shorter than I, with a very full figure. Her ranger garb was a soft tan and fit snuggly over her chest and belly. She carried a bow and an ax. Tillee had honey colored, short hair, with wonderful crystal brown wings. Within moments it was clear we would be able to work well together, so we packed up and took off. Most of our supplies we left with friends in the convoy. We couldn't haul a bigger tent without the aid of a mule or two and Haller would never have loaned us one so we didn't bother to ask. We packed what we could carry and took off back the way the convoy had come. After a few hours we circled around. As we walked we learned Laybee's thoughts on the fires. It made a depressing kind of sense.
