Chapter 8

Delaney tipped her head back, exposing her throat for more of the nibbling kisses Sean trailed across her skin. “Mmm, that’s nice. Hawaii was such a great idea.”

“A last hurrah before you start back school,” he murmured. His hands skimmed along her ribs, around to the hook of her bikini top. He flicked it open, drawing it down her arms, leaving her breasts exposed to the tropical air—and his mouth.

Her breath came shorter. “I like your idea of a last hurrah.”

“Making love by a waterfall has been on my list.” The roar of it nearly drowned out his words.

Delaney threaded her fingers through the hair at his nape as he licked and suckled, until she felt an answering tug deeper, lower. “I really like that list. Maybe we should shift into the water, though. It’s a lot hotter than I thought Hawaii would be.”

“In a minute.” He worked his way down her torso, fingers hooking into the sides of her bikini bottoms and drawing them down.

Sweat slicked her skin, and she moved restlessly as he settled his broad shoulders between her legs. “Much as I really want you to do what you’re about to do, I’m actually getting overheated in a not good way. Let’s get into the water.”

Sean rested his cheek against her thigh as he stared up her body. “We could hit the shower. Shower sex is on the list, too.”

Dragging herself out of the depths of sleep, Delaney forced her eyes open. The heat and roar came with her, out of the dream. It was too bright. Morning already? Disoriented, she sat up in bed—and saw the flames.

Consciousness slammed into her, even as she began to cough from the billowing smoke. For a moment she could only stare, dumbfounded, at the beast she’d heard Sean call the dragon, crawling across her apartment.

Sean. Fire. Move.

She rolled out of bed and hit the floor, knowing she needed to stay low. The wood beneath her knees was hot. Too hot. Was the fire in the garage below? Her body felt uncoordinated and slow. Too much wine with dinner. She was still a little tipsy. Or maybe that was oxygen deprivation. Grabbing a discarded t-shirt from a chair, she covered her mouth and tried not to breathe too deep. She had to get to the door. But even as she headed in that direction, flames leapt from the wall of the kitchen and raced across the ceiling. Cinders fell, igniting the sofa and effectively blocking her way.

The bathroom. There was a small window in there that opened onto a hackberry tree. Maybe she could get out that way, or at least wet herself down. The smoke was getting thicker, darker. She couldn’t quite see, but
