When Russell arrived Lewis was suffering from the effects of two accidents in the docks, in one of which a truck hit him in the chest. But he was able to play with the help of medication, and Russell set up the recorder in his bedroom, where the clarinettist, along with his friend Lawrence Marrero on banjo and Slow Drag on bass, put on acetate one of the best-loved of all New Orleans recordings. To Lewis it was just a blues, but the record had to have a name, and after considering various titles Eugene Williams dubbed it Burgundy Street Blues (pronounced in New Orleans with the second syllable emphasised), after the street where both the rhythm men lived. Later, while touring, Lewis was never allowed to appear without playing this famous number, in his hands one of the most moving of all instrumental blues. The group also recorded two other tunes and a brief passage with Lewis on the flute.
