Chapter 13: Maps
In a case of an emergency you need to head to an emergency station, a rally point or whatever it is that the emergency plans put in place by the appropriate authorities expect you to do. In more organized areas it is also possible that there are assigned emergency routes. However, to be able to use these solutions, you need to be aware of them in the first place, and then have some means that you will have marked upon how to get there.
This is why it is imperative to include area maps in your emergency box. Ideally you need a set of:
1) Road maps where you will have highlighted the exact route that you need to take to get to the designated areas. It would be useful to have marked at least one alternative route as well, both in reference to your starting point (in case you learn right from the start that your first choice will not be available), as well as in reference to the position of your first option, should you reach there and the designated area is either full or inoperable.
2) Geographical maps where you will have marked possible camping sites should there be a case where either there is no emergency plan in place, or you are advised that all emergency points are inaccessible. It would also be useful to have marked positions with caves which are both safe and can provide you with natural shelter.
It is self-explanatory that a map cannot exist without a compass. It is assumed that you already know how to read a map. If not, it is strongly recommended that you learn right now.
It is advisable to organize excursions on every position that you have marked on the map before any emergency situation occurs. This will allow you to have knowledge of the lay of the land, and assign priority numbers to each potential camping site. This could also be useful should you have a family and you get separated during the evacuation phase. Assigning such a point as a rendezvous place will allow you to get reunited.
You should also remain aware at all times for any major changes that occur in the area. A new stadium or another large area construction like a convention center or a hospital, may be closer to you and be designated as an emergency station after you have marked a few spots on your map.
