CHAPTER 29

Ty

Leaving Tess asleep in my bed, still wrapped in her robe and now under the blanket, challenges all of my discipline. I want to climb in beside her and hold her until the world ends. As long as I’m with her before, during, and after, I wouldn’t give a damn if it did.

She is everything that matters in this life and beyond.

But I force myself to go, to leave her there sleeping, after giving orders that she isn’t to be awakened until she wakes on her own. I know she needs to push to be herself again, to gain some confidence that was stolen from her, but I also know—all too well—that recovery takes time. She’s slowly weaning off the meds, but she isn’t there yet.

Unfortunately for me, I have a cover to maintain, which means I can’t stay with her, watch over her, distract her from working too hard. But I am quite pleased to have overruled her absurd ideas about not going back to sleep.

While she rests, I’ll be shoeing nine horses at three barns around the area. Leaving my property has never been easy, even before the most important person in my life came to live here, but now it’s excruciating. I know I gladly embraced a completely ridiculous illusion of safety, a fairy tale that nothing could find me at my own personal oasis. After coming so close to death, filled with so much regret, that illusion was all I had, so I drank it down. But reality is creeping toward my oasis, and we all need to be ready for what’s coming.

As I drive down the country road, I think about Tess, how she pulled open her robe and showed me her body, so open, willing, beautiful. The way she responds to my touch, the way she trusts me—damn, nothing in my life has been better than this.

The painful erection, trapped in my jeans, that accompanies thoughts of Tess seems a small price to pay. That said, I better stop thinking about her before I arrive at the next ranch, with its statistically challenging number of children.

I already know that this is going to be a long day, but by its end, Tess will be mine in a way she will never forget, doubt, or regret.
