“So, you know that I’m going back to London tomorrow?” Sophie asks.

“Uh-huh,” I comment, lining the paint tubes up.

“Well, how would you feel about me taking a couple of your pieces back with me? Obviously, you’d need to sign them first and I’d take your number and keep in touch with you about how I get on. But what do you think?” she rushes out.

“Oh, I didn’t know you’d had any luck with it yet?” I ask, buying time to think as my hand hovers over the ultramarine.

“Well, not officially. Obviously, people want to see what I’m talking about before committing, but there are a couple of the smaller galleries I work with regularly that are interested in taking a look.”

“Oh.”

“Yes. I speak with them quite often about some of the more developed students Mary-Ann and I work with at the courses we run. It doesn’t have to be perfect to have value, and when you become an established brand, those earlier pieces become highly sought after.”

“I’m not sure that any of this is going to be highly sought after.” I chuckle. “But of course, if you’d like to take a couple, feel free. Alessia was going to put me in touch with someone here too. So exciting,” I say, attempting to put something like the excitement I should be feeling into my voice. Yet, it still comes out as a question.

“Definitely,” she agrees, clearly not picking up on the anxious tone of my voice. “Do you have time to go through them together now?”

“Sure.” I shrug. “Tia will be back with the Prosecco in two minutes anyway.”

“Well, you did give her a reason to celebrate.”

“I’m not sure I’d go that far,” I argue. “And I still need to work out a ‘get out of there’ plan that will work. But I’m excited… I think.”

“You think?” She chuckles from the sofa.

“Yeah, I’m not sure if these butterflies are because I’m absolutely terrified, a little excited, or a combination of the two.”

“I’m sure you’ll have a lovely time,” she placates. “Nobody is going to let anything happen to you. You know that, right?”

She seems appeased by the small smile and the nod I give her before she jumps up, heading excitedly to the stack of canvas’ in the corner.

“I see you got some more stuff…”

“Yeah, I took a trip with Tia.” I shrug. “It seemed like a safe first venture into the outside world.”

“And that went okay?”

“Perfectly,” I agree. “Nobody bothered us. Not that any average person would dare even look in our direction with Dustin and Damiano loitering around and glowering at everyone.”

“Yeah, they can be a bit like that.” She chuckles. “It takes a little bit of getting used to.”

“So, you’ve not had this your whole life too then?” I ask, perching on the edge of the sofa.

“Oh no. My brother has had some form of security for most of his adult life with being the next-in-line to a fortune and all that jazz. But not so much me. Not until Carlos came along anyway.
