FIG 5.5: Walls: Wallpaper grew in popularity, as in these examples, with those which simulated a fabric or decorative effect like flocks and moires (chintzy wood grain effect) and bold stripes being distinctive. Decorative paint effects and gilding were used on walls of stronger colours, with maroon and orangey reds popular in dining rooms, and greens in libraries and drawing rooms. Royal blues and sulphur yellows were also used. Wall mouldings could be painted the same colour as the wall or picked out in white with details in gilt. Coordinating colours were used so carpets, curtains and upholstery were harmonised with the wall colour rather than a scattering of individual pieces and patterns which had been acceptable before.
