The Universe

Walter had been willing to suspend and subsume to human compassion every scientific and logical lesson he had learned in his life. He had consented to surrender his intellect to his heart. Now, with the cold scientific evidence before him, in the brutal dishonesty of the missing shard, Walter’s scientific training was vindicated, his worst fears confirmed. The Universe, Walter concluded, was telling him what his intellect had been telling him all along: You cannot trust Krazy 8. If you allow the psychopath to go free he will kill your entire family.

With Walter, I had the overwhelming sense in this scene that some unalterable aspect of life was intruding into Walter’s interaction with the young meth distributor. But I think my perception of the unyielding nature of the Universe differed significantly from Walter’s. I did not understand Walter’s destiny to have been determined at that moment, but rather three days earlier, when he had made the decision to break bad. It was that earlier decision that forced Walter into the unpleasant Catch-22 predicament of choosing between his family’s life and Krazy 8’s life.

Even at that moment, though, staring at the broken pieces of ceramic plate on Jesse’s kitchen table, Walter had more than two options. He could have gone to the police with his story. He could have fled with his family. He could have gone into business with Krazy 8, as he later did with Tuco.
