I stood patiently in one of the elevators in Cornerstone Tower as it ascended to the fiftieth floor. When the doors opened, I was greeted with the extravagant waiting area devoid of its usual hum of staff coming and going as they went about their workday. I wasnât surprised to find the floor completely empty, as I was almost always the first to arrive. I glanced down at my Rolex as I walked past the slate gray leather sofas and down the corridor toward my office. It was six-thirty. Laura wouldnât be here for another half hour.
I pushed through the frosted glass door and headed straight for my desk. I barely noticed the view of the Manhattan skyline through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows as I shrugged out of my suit coat. I slung the jacket over the back of the desk chair and sat down.
As was customary, Laura had printed todayâs schedule before going home yesterday and had left it face up on my desk. I barely glanced at it, knowing it was most likely changing anyway. I had very little interest in what was happening today. All I seemed to think and care about was this rift between Krystina and me.
Too many days had gone by without talking to my wife. Iâd never gone this long without speaking to her. She hadnât come to work yesterday, so there had been no chance run in on the elevator. There hadnât even been a single text message. Iâd expected her to call after I left the house on Sunday night, but now it was Wednesday morning and I still hadnât heard a word from her.
I could have called, but ultimately decided against it. Krystina needed this lesson and calling her wouldnât help her learn. Hale had given me an update and I knew she had brought the child back to our home. I didnât like itânot one bitâbut I knew it wouldnât be long before she figured out that I was right. Any kid who came from that part of town was bound to be nothing but trouble for her. Stereotypes werenât stereotypes if they always proved true. I just needed to wait this out a little longer.
I moved the mouse to wake the computer, then clicked on my inbox. I shook my head when I saw the new emails that had come between the time Iâd left the penthouse and when I arrived at Stone Enterprise. It didnât matter if Iâd just sorted through them earlier that morning. There were another forty-eight that needed my attention.
Jesus. Doesnât anyone sleep?
And here Iâd thought I was the only one who started my day at such an ungodly hour.
I scrolled through the ever-growing list but stopped when I saw an email that Hale had sent five minutes ago. The name of Krystinaâs father was typed in the subject line. Without hesitation, I clicked on it.
