CHAPTER TWENTY

PHOENIX

“God damn it, Travis! What are you trying to do to me?” I complain as I finish the last round of the HIIT exercises he has set up for me. I know my first prelim fight is coming up, but the man is training me like I’m about to go for the heavyweight belt. I don’t think my fellow SEALS train this hard.

“You’re the one who said you wanted to take an hour off from today’s training session. That means we gotta train extra hard for the time we have. Stop bitching and do the workouts,” he says.

“You’re going to break, Phoenix. I can’t wait to see it.” Rush laughs from where he’s sitting on the side, just sipping a bottle of water. I look up from my set and glare at him.

I don’t even have time to glower correctly.

“Nah, that’s not how you break him. I can show you the way. . . but it would involve a really small doghouse.”

My stomach clenches and warning bells go off in my head as I hear Troy’s annoying voice yet again.

“What the fuck is up with this dude?” Travis asks.

Most of the guys that have been here for a while know all about Troy and how much of a douchebag he was in high school. They even see him around town sometimes, but this is the first time he’s been a repeat at the gym.

“You keep talking shit.” I get to my feet, the workouts making me a little unsteady. I drop out of the ring and take a step in his direction. Travis and Rush come up to me and stop me from getting any closer.

“You can’t stop me from talking the truth, Phoenix. No matter how many of your little buddies you may have convinced you were big and bad. I know the truth. We both know the truth.” Troy smirks at me, and I lunge at him.

“Stop the shit!” Corey says and walks over to where we are from across the gym.

He’s working with one of the little kids in attendance today.

“Look here, boy. I don’t know why you keep showing up, harassing my fighters, but if you don’t got any business here, what’s the point?” Corey asks.

“Maybe I want to have some business here? I heard through the grapevine that you were letting my little brother here fight. I can promise you, it’s not going to be very much to look at. Phoenix is big, but there’s not much behind his weight,” Troy says and glares at me.

“Who the fuck are you talking about? Have you ever seen Phoenix fight before?” Rush says, clearly confused.

“That’s not going to work on me anymore, Troy. I’m not the same little boy you can bully and beat up on,” I snarl at him.

“Sure, you are. People don’t change just because they go away for a few years. You’re still the same person.” He keeps me in his sights. “Woof, woof.”

I feel my body closing in on itself.

When I was in that closet and would be screaming for help, he used to say I sounded like a dog.
